There are two main topics of conversation at most nonprofits — the mission the organization was founded to accomplish and where to find the money to accomplish that mission.
What all grants have in common is a requirement that organizations submit a detailed grant proposal for what is almost invariably a competitive award process.
In this video, we will talk about how to write an effective grant proposal to increase your chances of winning the grant for your non-profit.

Before we begin, if you want to outsource your grant writing, you can do so by clicking the first link in the description. Freelance professionals are writing proposals for non-profits starting at $5.

Introduce your organization
Every nonprofit organization has an origin story that explains the when and why of its founding. Explaining the inspiration for your organization is a key element in writing a persuasive grant proposal.
The foundation, government agency, or donor offering the grant will certainly want a solid understanding of the organization receiving their funding. Provide an overview of your nonprofit that describes how it came into existence and how it has fared since its founding. Include the mission statement and organizational vision, and introduce the team that runs the organization, putting special emphasis on those who will manage the grant.
Broadly explain the project
There are grants available for different purposes. Some are intended to underwrite the ongoing costs of the organization; others focus on specific programs. Grants are often available to pay for the capital costs of new buildings or the startup costs of a new program.
Once you’ve found a grant that matches what you’re trying to do, the goal is to persuade the donors your project is the one best suited for their investment. Begin by introducing the name of the project. Never underestimate the persuasive power of an inspiring name!
Describe the project, including start and completion dates. If this is to be an ongoing program, explain when you expect to launch it. Include the significant milestones as it gets underway. What’s the purpose of the project? Will it allow you to do more of what you already do, or will it allow your organization to address needs that are currently beyond your capabilities?
Be sure to clearly state how much money you need to accomplish your goal.
Get more detailed
A good grant proposal, much like a good novel, first gets the reader interested and then gets into the plot, or the case for the proposal, and the project details.
It’s often helpful to present the project timeline schematically from the proposed starting date, including significant milestones, the hiring timeline, and the completion date or date of the first project evaluation.
Detail how the project will enhance your organization’s ability to achieve its mission. Get specific — include the number of additional clients you could serve, new services you could offer, or staff you could add. Funders always want to be confident their money is being spent as intended.
Budget transparency
Nonprofit organizations always have a harder time justifying their results to donors than businesses do justify their results to investors. The business, after all, is either making money or not. Nonprofits working to eliminate illiteracy, food insecurity, housing insecurity, income inequality, and environmental problems aren’t likely to show such unequivocal results.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Chris Grundner is the president and CEO of the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement. Since his arrival in February 2012, he has enabled the organization to nearly double its membership and significantly expand its reach. Grundner, originally from Buffalo, NY, received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He earned his MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1999, Grundner moved to Wilmington to join the co-brand credit card division of First USA Bank as the Director of Business Development. Due to his significant achievements, Grundner became one of the organization’s youngest Senior Vice Presidents in early 2002. However, later that same year, his wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 29. Grundner left his job at JPMorgan Chase in 2004 after her passing and started The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005 with the goal of bringing national attention to the disease. Through the foundation, Grundner has launched two brain tumor awareness initiatives – GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME® and Tulips Against Tumors™ – both of which became national programs when the organization merged with the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) in March 2010.

While I’m an Estate and Medicaid planning attorney, I have also been involved in civic groups and charities for more than 20 years, and I often see a lot of confusion over how 501c3s and 501c4s act, especially when it comes to civic clubs and groups. That’s because the average club member just wants to go out into the community and do good works without getting bogged down in taxation and reporting minutia. However, this has recently come up as a major issue in Civitan International, so it’s worth going over the basics.

When it comes to civic groups and service clubs, they are most appropriately 501c4, non-profit organizations, classified by the federal government as “social welfare organizations.” Your average Civitan Club is comprised of members who want to volunteer in the community by helping people in need, whether it is helping deliver hot meals to seniors, volunteering at Special Olympics events, or building wheelchair ramps. The common theme among most civic clubs is that the members want to do something to help. This even extends to fundraising events, such as charitable bike rides, bake sales, and dinner & auction events, but usually the civic club will partner with a 501c3 in order to let them collect the money. So, what are the hallmarks of a 501c4?

·        They are technically corporate entities that do not pay local, state, or federal taxes.

·        They are not “owned” by anyone, so there are no profits distributed to shareholders.

·        All money collected has to be spent on the non-profit’s stated purpose, including administrative purposes and for expenses related to the functioning of the organization.

·        An informational return has to be filed with the federal government and possibly other government entities.

·        If the organization dissolves, all assets have to go to a 501c3 charity or charities.

·        There is federal form to apply for 501c4 status that is comparatively simple compared to other status applications.

·        People contributing money to 501c4s do not get to deduct those contributions on their taxes.

Taxing entities such as the IRS do not usually highly scrutinize 501c4 organizations unless there is some proof they are excessively lobbying or there is some evidence of funds benefiting particular members. So how are 501c3s different? The federal government insists that 501c3 organizations have an exempt purpose that is “charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety,” and so on. The hallmarks of a 501c3 look a lot like a 501c4 at first but there are a few big differences.

·        They are the same in that they don’t pay taxes, there are no profits distributed to owners, money has to be spent furthering the organization’s purpose, tax returns have to be filed, and if the organization dissolves, the assets also have to go to a 501c3 charity.

·        There is a fairly extensive application form to the IRS with lots of attachments and questions, and, wait for it…

·        People contributing money to a 501c3 get to deduct contributions on their taxes.

That last one is the whole ballgame, and it explains the huge difference between a 501c3 and a 501c4. If you give money to a 501c3, you get to deduct money on your taxes. Now, suddenly, there is a much greater scrutiny by the federal government in both the application process AND in scrutiny over expenditures. In addition, the 501c3 charity has a lot more reporting requirements to donors on how much of their contribution is deductible, and that means a lot more recordkeeping.

This is why most civic organizations have two separate entities. The main civic group and all of the member clubs and other levels of organization will typically be 501c4 entities. On the other hand, these large civic organizations will separately create a 501c3 foundation where 100% of its work is focused on raising money and distributing it for purely charitable ends.

This is the difference between owning both a bicycle and a motorcycle versus trying to install an internal combustion engine on your average mountain bike and then having to meet all of the registration, licensing, and taxing requirements twice for the same vehicle and trying to separate the value of the motored part and the pedal part every single day. Plus, you now have to deal with explaining to a cop after getting pulled over that you were only pedaling your bike that day so you only have to wear a bicycle helmet and not a full motorcycle helmet.

You believe nonprofits help people improve their lives. You want nonprofits to succeed. You give money. You volunteer. But when it comes to fundraising—the single-most important thing you can do to revolutionize a nonprofit—you’d rather let “fundraising experts” handle it. In this Tedx Talk, Andrea Proulx Buinicki shows you how to harness your passion and claim your own ability to raise money for causes that transform peoples’ lives.

Andrea Proulx Buinicki founded Giving Focus, a philanthropy consulting firm, in 2011 in order to make the world a more compassionate place. She coaches, guides, and consults nonprofit organizations and churches seeking to improve leadership and strategy, fundraising, marketing and communications.

Andrea was nominated as one of the “Influential Women of Northwest Indiana” (2014) and recognized as one of “Northwest Indiana’s 20 under 40” by The Times newspaper BUSINESS Magazine (2012). She and her family live in Valparaiso, IN. Andrea currently serves as a President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, IN Northwest Chapter; board member for Opportunity Enterprises; and pastoral council member for Queen of All Saints Catholic Parish.
